Tennessee's State Board of Education adopted the Common Core State Standards in mathematics and English/Language Arts in July 2010. This is an initiative led by the states designed to create a common core of state standards that is relevant and reflects the knowledge and skills young people need for success in college and the workforce.

The Common Core State Standards are already closely aligned with Tennessee’s existing Curriculum Standards. Beginning in the fall of 2011, Tennessee schools will begin implementation of the Common Core State Standards Initiative.  The phase-in of these new standards will begin with kindergarten students in 2011-2012, with full K-12 implementation of the Common Core State Standards in 2014.

This website will serve as the primary hub for information about Tennessee's Common Core implementation and a portal to resources from educators across the state and across the country. Please send any Common Core-related questions or requests to tncore.questions@tn.gov. A response should be received within 24 hours.

News about the NCLB Waiver:  Tennessee's waiver from NCLB requirements eliminates AYP status determinations and consequences as we have come to know them.  At the heart of the waiver request is a goal to improve the proficiency of Tennessee students by 20 percent over the next five years, with each system's individualized objectives determined by past academic performance.

Grades 3-8 Math Core Focus Standards-In 2012-13 TN teachers will continue to teach the current TDP standards (minus the SPI’s to be dropped from the TCAP). In addition, teachers will also be teaching the TNCore Focus Standards.

List of Dropped SPIs- In the 2012-2013 school year, the math TCAP (grades 3-8) will be slimmed down and narrowed in scope of curricular coverage. We will remove a selection of Tennessee Diploma Project (TDP) State Performance Indicators (SPI’s)—those that are not part of the CCSSM--from the TCAP.

Explanation of SPIs Dropped-The TN Department of Education plans to narrow the focus of the TCAP for the next two school years (2012-13 and 2013-14) by removing 15-25% of the SPIs in each 3-8 grade in mathematics.
