Subject Credits Requirements for Students
Math 4 1 Credit Required Each Year of High School: Including Algebra I, II, Geometry and a fourth higher level Math Course
Science 3 Including Biology, Chemistry or Physics, and a third lab course
English 4 Can substitute English III and IV for DE Comp I and II
Social Studies 4 Including World History, United States History, Government, AND EITHER Economics/Personal Finance (1 Credit) or Marketing and Personal Finance (2 Credits)
Wellness 1
Physical Education 1
Foreign Language 2 Must be of the Same Foreign Language
Fine Arts 1 Foreign Language and/or Fine Arts can be waived for students not going to a university to expand the elective focus

Additional Graduation Requirements

  • ACT or SAT for Regular Education Diploma
    Students enrolled in a Tennessee public school during their 11th grade year shall take either the ACT or SAT to receive a regular high school diploma. ACT or SAT scores are only submitted to postsecondary institutions at the student's discretion. All juniors take the ACT on the state testing date in the spring. All students are encouraged to participate in the ACT or SAT, the graduation requirement only applies to students earning a regular education diploma.

    United State Civics Test
    All high school students must pass a United States Civics test composed of questions from the Civics Test administered by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. A school in which all seniors receiving a regular diploma score 85% or higher on the United States Civics test shall be recognized on the Tennessee Department of Education’s website as a United States Civics All-Star School for that school year.

Requirements for Graduating with Honors & Distinctions

  • Top 10% Requirements

    • Honors English: minimum of 3 units; sophomore level and above
    • Math: 4 units, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Applied Math or above (Sails/ Bridge Math not included)
    • Science: 4 units (Choose from Biology II, Chemistry II, Physics, Human Anatomy & Physiology, any Advanced Placement Science or any Dual Enrollment Science)

    Graduation with Honors Distinction
    Tennessee graduates who maintain a B average and complete an additional approved credential will graduate with distinction.  Approved credentials include:

    • Nationally recognized industry certification
    • Tennessee Governor’s School
    • All State Musical Organization
    • National Merit Finalist or Semifinalist
    • A composite score of 31 or higher on the ACT
    • A core of 3 or higher on two AP Exams
    • 12 or more hours of post-secondary credit by transcript

    Honors Diploma ACT Minimum Requirements

    • English: 18
    • Reading: 22
    • Math: 22
    • Science: 23

Graduation with Work Ethic Diploma Distinction

  • The Work Ethic Diploma was developed as part of the LEAP grant. It was designed to encourage students to develop the qualities that meet workforce needs as identified by local industry partners, which includes begin drug free, good attendance, being on time, participation in career and technical courses, and earning credit at The Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) or WSCC while students are still in high school or earning an industry certification.

Graduating with Service Honors

  • High school students are encouraged to complete community service activities. For students who perform 10 hours of community service for every semester they attend high school they will be recognized as a graduate with service hours.
