Highlanders Track & Field Compete at TSSAA State Championships

Gatlinburg-Pittman sent 15 student athletes to the TSSAA State Track & Field Championships on May 24, 2019 at the MTSU Track & Field complex in Murfreesboro.  Eleven of these students became state medalist and attained all-state status.  Emerson Fulton defended his 800 Meter Run State Championship Title becoming the first GPHS student to win back to back state titles.  He also won the T.S.S.A.A. Cross Country Championship in the fall of 2018, making him a state champion three times.  GPHS also had several students gain all-state access at the track meet.  Kevin Burkett placed 4th in the shot put.  Cannon Piller placed 3rd in the Decathlon and 5th in the Pole Vault.  Samuel Fulton placed 5th in the 3200 meter run.  Burke Hardin placed 5th in the Decathlon.  Other Highlander qualifiers were Ethan Stinnett and Grady Branton a part of the 4x400 team.

The Lady Highlanders also had a standout performance at the State Championship.  Sydney McCarty medaled in 4 out of 5 events she qualified in.  She took 8th place in the pentathlon, 5th place in the long jump, 8th place as the third leg of the 4x800 relay team, 7th place as anchor leg in the 4x400 relay team, and just missed the medal stand in the triple jump finishing 9th.  Lily Stinnett medaled in all three of her events.  She took 5th place in the 3200 meter run, 8th place as anchor leg in the 4x800 meter relay, and she placed 7th as the second leg of the 4x400 relay team.  Emma Hamilton placed 8th as the first leg of the 4x800 relay team.  Rylee Henry placed 8th as the second leg of the 4x800 relay team.  Jasmen Bright placed 7th as the first leg of the 4x400 relay team and also finished 16th in the 400 meter dash.  Sophie Henry placed 7th as the 3rd leg of the 4x400 meter relay team.  Darcie Badgett finished 5th in the shot put.  Amy Pender finished 10th in the pole vault.  She tied the 8th place athlete with a height of 6-6, but placed 10th due to scratches or missed attempts.

Overall, it was a great showing for Gatlinburg-Pittman High School at the 2019 T.S.S.A.A. State Track and Field Championships, the boys team loses Emerson Fulton, Burke Hardin, and Cannon Piller to graduation and the girls team only loses Sophie Henry to graduation, so the future of Gatlinburg-Pittman High School Track and Field looks bright.
