Education graphicIn December 2015, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed into law. The ESSA amended and reauthorized the 50-year-old Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965. The ESEA is a federal education law with longstanding commitment to equal opportunity for all students.

The new ESSA law builds on key areas of progress in recent years made possible by the efforts of educators, communities, parents, and students across the country. ESSA includes provisions that will help to ensure success for students. The main sources of federal education funding programs are the ESSA and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). ESSA funding supplements state and local resources and supports students from low-income families and low-achieving schools. IDEA is the primary federal funding source for students with disabilities and special education.

  • The purpose of Tennessee's federally funded Title I, Part A Program is to support local school districts in improving teaching and learning for students in high poverty schools so that these students meet the state's challenging content and performance standards. Title I is one program under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.     Title I schools can operate either as targeted assistance or school wide. Targeted assistance schools identify students who are at risk of not meeting the state's content and performance standards and provide individualized instructional programs to the identified students so that they may meet the state's standards. School wide programs use their funds to improve the entire program of the school so that all students are impacted.

  • Title I, Part D - Neglected & Delinquent Education Program

    The purpose of the Neglected and Delinquent Education Program is:

    • to improve educational services for children in local and state institutions for neglected and delinquent children
    • to provide such children and youth the services needed to make a successful transition from institutionalization to further schooling or employment,
    • to prevent at-risk youth from dropping out of school, and
    • to provide dropouts and youth returning from institutions with a support system to ensure their continued education.

  • Title II, Part A - Teacher & Principal Training & Recruiting

    The purpose of Title II, Part A is to increase the academic achievement of all students by helping schools and districts improve teacher and principal quality and ensure that all teachers are highly qualified.

  • Title III - English Language Learners

    Through Title III, students who have a primary language other than English receive instruction in English in a specialized setting.

  • Title VI, Part B - Rural Education Initiative

    The Small, Rural School Achievement Program is an initiative designed to address the unique needs of rural school districts.

  • The purpose of IDEA, Part B is to support the needs of students with disabilities between the ages of 3 and 21.
