The Sevier County School System recognizes the importance of learning literacy skills at school and also at home. According to Scholastic, “Reading helps children understand their challenging world and strengthens their creative thinking. But with so many distractions, many kids are reading less and less well”. Like any other skill, the more you read, the better you’ll read!

Therefore, we invite you to join the 20 for 20 Family Reading Challenge during the month of March to experience how you can engage in your child’s learning, strengthen your bond, and encourage reading at home.

“The 20 for 20 Family Reading Challenge was created for students to complete with” a parent, caregiver, or guardian. “All you have to do is read together for at least 20 minutes a day for 20 days.”

TIPS FOR READING AT HOME

  • Set aside a time and place to read together
  • Role play (read in different voices for different characters)
  • Point word by word as you read together
  • Discuss the meaning of new words
  • Review the meaning of difficult words

  • Ask about the pictures and what is happening in the story
  • Link reading and writing together by having your child write down what they enjoyed about the book
