Fourth Grade Literacy

SCSS Literacy Vision

All students will consistently experience evidence-based, high-quality literacy instruction to become confident readers, writers, and thinkers.

  • Additional information related to 3rd and 4th grade Learning Acceleration may be found on the Tennessee Department of Education website.

  • The Sevier County School System is committed to ensuring all students become confident readers, writers, and thinkers.  In an effort to monitor student progress, multiple assessments are administered throughout the year and used to identify additional supports your child may need and will be used to make decisions which align with Tennessee’s promotion of students from third grade law, TCA 49-6-3115.

These supports include tutoring services through the TN ALL Corps program, which include:

    • Tutoring by a certified teacher two days a week for 30-45 minutes during the 2023-2024 school year.
    • Targeting of specific gaps in foundational literacy skills to help students access grade level content in the ELA classroom.
    • Tutor-supported exposure to upcoming units/lessons by pre-teaching new vocabulary, building background knowledge, and supporting the content knowledge aspect of ELA lessons.

  • Pathways to 4th Grade Diagram

The following students are exempt from the retention law:

    • Special Education (specific reading disability)
    • Previously retained students
    • ELL students receiving less than 2 years of ELA instruction
    • Approved appeals to the TN Department of Education (Approaching Expectations category only)
